AUTHENTIC MATERIALS
AUTHENTIC MATERIAL is anything that a native speaker would hear or read or use.
When using authentic materials in the classroom, make sure that the TASK is authentic!
Why use authentic materials?
- they’re real
- they’re more interesting and motivating
- they give Ss confidence when they can understand them
- they provide examples of language as it is really used
- they provide real cultural content (which leads to involvement)
- they lend themselves to authentic tasks
- they prompt Ss’ independence in learning
Possible problems with using authentic materials:
- expressions only natives may know
- Ss wanting to know every single word
- task must be suitable to the level (not necessarily the materials!)
- incorrect or slang expressions
