AUTHENTIC MATERIALS

 

AUTHENTIC MATERIAL is anything that a native speaker would hear or read or use.

 

When using authentic materials in the classroom, make sure that the TASK is authentic!

 

Why use authentic materials?

• they’re real
• they’re more interesting and motivating
• they give Ss confidence when they can understand them
• they provide examples of language as it is really used
• they provide real cultural content (which leads to involvement)
• they lend themselves to authentic tasks
• they prompt Ss’ independence in learning

 

 

 

 

 

Possible problems with using authentic materials:

• expressions only natives may know
• Ss wanting to know every single word
• task must be suitable to the level (not necessarily the materials!)
• incorrect or slang expressions
